Among the alumni who have attended Cheshire Academy are Gideon Welles (Secretary of the Navy in the administrations of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson), Joseph Wheeler (Confederate cavalry general during the Civil War), John Frederick Kensett (Hudson River School painter) and J.P.
